Audio really travels between these sessions. Chromium supplies the microphone, so a muted participant still negotiates the call and still receives packets — which is exactly why presence is not perception.

The two rooms

room enforces its own mute. room-legacy updates this control, sets the label to mic-off, and never disables the outgoing track. Screenshot both and they are identical; the difference is only audible in somebody else's session.
